Outline:

Health Sciences Information professionals are starting to engage in the use of social media tools like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, among others, with the purpose of connecting with colleagues and/or the stakeholders of the organizations they work at.  This interaction includes sharing, dissemination, dialogue and promotion of key information and knowledge, in ways never seen before. Twitter, for instance, provides the opportunity to share and connect, in real time, with people around the world.    Although the  use of social media gain popularity every day, it is necessary to learn the basics to take full advantage of  all the possibilities this new way of communicating offers to us

Health Sciences information professionals have in social media a unique channel to outreach beyond their traditional networks of operation. All what is needed is a clear objective, order and innovation. But we need to do it properly and must learn from the experts in the field

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand what social media is and entails
  2. Understand the differences between traditional media and social media.  Challenges and opportunities
  3. Understand the functionality of Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, vimeo, picassa/flicker for professional purposes. Opportunities and risks
  4. Understand when social media is the right approach and when not.
  5. Have an opportunity to  share knowledge and conduct dialogue about social media and us

Participants will have  the option to join the  PAHO/WHO Community  of Social  Media  users which seeks to serve as the hub of knowledge exchange and learning for staff and partners
